Ask the Boys……………….

The boys were excited this morning as today they should reach the half way point……….

I am 10 yrs old and in 4th grade. I am low vision like Alan. I was diagnosed last year in 3rd grade. My Mom works at Haas and told me about your trek and I am going to show it to my class. I hope to be the 2nd visually impaired person to do this trip when I grow up. My question: How many miles do you go each day? Do you decide each morning? Does the plan ever change during the day?  Reid Fellner

Andrew answered – Firstly ‘Go Bears’!! – Typically we travel 14-17 miles each day but this can vary whilst we are out due to the weather conditions – when it’s snowing it’s a lot slower – we don’t decide on distance we just have scheduled marches, we do 6 x 75 minute marches a day.  We are so pleased to hear that you too would like to reach the South Pole – inspiring stuff.

Dear Alan, It seems you are going to get there shortly. Do not just wear a Blind in Business T shirt, or you’ll freeze, Wear it by all means, but with many layers. What is the worst thing about it all? I would think everything about it would be the worst. I prefer Tahiti a great deal more. Here, Dan Justin Robin and I are well and moan if the temperature is 10 degrees. We all send our best wishes.  Michael Kenny (Blind in Business)

Alan answered – I miss fresh fruit and vegetables as I think all the team do!

There is a character who was interviewed in “Outside” magazine who is headed to the Antarctic. He claims he will use a kite sail to reach the South Pole and will be able to go 100km a day.  I have seen picture of the Antarctic surface, would it be possible to do that? Are there prevailing winds or do they blow from all corners of the compass?

Andrew answered – Yes this has been achieved before by someone kite sailing from the South Pole to the coast it took him 5 days going 100 miles each day. The winds are generally from the South Pole and reach up to 25 mph it also makes it really cold!!!!

Hey Guys, This is Tiffany from New York. I was one of the clients that were at the Carroll Center who was at the table when you guys called. My question is for Hannah. What made Hannah want to do this five times? Tiffany Krause

Hannah answered – I have a passion for the Antarctic and I have a great desire to share this with the people who come here.

  1. In today’s newspaper an article mentioned there were 10 expeditions headed to the South Pole. One such group was a women going solo, she was from England, so maybe that it explains it. But my question is her route only appeared to be 300 something miles. How many routes are there, what is the longest, shortest?
